Fairchild Semiconductor’s Voltage Translator Simplifies Design in SD Card Applications
The FXL2SD106 with Built-in Automatic Direction Control Increases the GPIOs Available for Programming
San Jose, California – July 15, 2008 – Fairchild Semiconductor (NYSE: FCS) brings designers of Secure Digital (SD) applications a solution that simplifies design with its low voltage, dual supply SD interface voltage translator. The FXL2SD106 has a built-in automatic direction control allowing the device to sense and control the direction the data should flow, without a direction control pin. This automatic direction control feature reduces design complexity by eliminating the need to program the General Purpose IO (GPIO) for direction control, and reduces the number of pins required for controlling the translator from 20 pins to 16 pins. This translator is ideal for applications using SD cards such as printers, laptop PCs, GPS systems and camera phones.
Fairchild’s FXL2SD106 is packaged in compact 2.5mm x 3.5mm, 16-pin DQFN packaging. DQFN packaging features no signal pins in the center of the package, allowing designers to easily bond this package to the board. With the pins at the periphery of the package, it allows for easier inspection and less rework, which accelerates design time.
The FXL2SD106 has been specifically designed to protect SD cards from adverse ESD events. These cards are often exposed to the outside environment, making them more susceptible to ESD events than other components. Fairchild’s SD interface voltage translator features ESD protection on the B side of 12kV, alternate solutions only reach a maximum of 6kV. This extra-protection feature affords the SD cards more protection in harsh environments. The FXL2SD106 also offers an output enable control feature allowing designers to disable the outputs to save power when the product is not in use.
This SD interface voltage translator is part of a comprehensive portfolio of application-specific logic translators. With the increased demand for high functionality in today’s electronics, the availability of application-specific logic translators reduce BOM costs and are instrumental in improving design performance to meet critical time-to-market windows. Fairchild’s translator portfolio includes the industry’s first 4-bit, low voltage, dual supply voltage translator with independent-direction controls, the industry’s only single-bit, bi-directional voltage translator with guaranteed performance down to 1.1V and the industry’s first dual-supply, bi-directional translator with independent-direction controls.
The FXL2SD106 utilizes lead-free (Pb-free) terminals and has been characterized for moisture sensitivity in accordance with the Pb-free reflow requirements of the joint IPC/JEDEC standard J-STD-020. All of Fairchild’s products are designed to meet the requirements of the European Union’s Directive on the restriction of the use of certain substances (RoHS).
