This past weekend, instructions were posted in the notorious /b/ forum of imageboard website 4chan which promised users an easy “hack” that, when entered, would provide backwards compatibility for the Xbox One; that is, following the instructions would allow users the ability to play older Xbox360 games on the newer Xbox One system.
To understand where this story is going, it should be noted that a few months ago this same forum posted faux instructions which convinced several users to dunk their new iPhones in water.
Why? For the folks in the /b/ forum, the question is more so, Why not?
The infographic you see above is what was posted to the forum. While it might seem official, there’s one problem with it: following these instructions will render the $500+ Xbox One completely useless.
The prank’s damage proved so significant in the hours that followed its original posting that Xbox Live’s programming director, Larry Hryb, had to take to Twitter to get people to stop following the instructions.
So why are people so eager to try an unproven hack in order to get backwards compatibility on their Xbox One? It’s been eight years since the last Xbox, the Xbox 360, was released. Given that much time, there are several popular titles that users have played over the years and grown pretty attached to.
And while Microsoft initially said they’d be open to streaming services as a means of providing users with access to these older titles, the company has since come out and said that making older editions of the console compatible with the Xbox One would be far too “problematic” to pursue.
As the DailyDot points out, things could always be worse: you could be the unfortunate father who, in a fit of eagerness to get his son what he wanted for the holidays, accidentally purchased a photo of an Xbox One on eBay . . . for $734.
