Audio amp ICs combine high performance and reliability
Unique protection circuitry allows high power output with low distortion
The Overture series of monolithic audio amplifiers is offered as
providing the highest performance and reliability of any available such
devices. The amplifiers feature unique protection circuitry–called
SPiKe–that inherently protects the devices from damage by instantaneous
temperature peaks, overvoltage, undervoltage, and overloads. The new
protection circuitry allows designers to extend output current and voltage
conditions to achieve required performance without fear of damaging the
device. In addition to voltage protection, the amplifiers have a safe
operating area that actively monitors the temperature/power
characteristics of the outputs and instantaneously self regulates. The
Overture family of amplifiers comprises the LM2876T, LM3875T, LM3876T, and
LM3886T, which provide continuous power of 25, 40, 40, and 60 W into 8
ohms, respectively. All the devices achieve an IMD (SMPTE) typical rating
of 0.004% and a minimum SNR of greater than 95 dB with a noise floor of 2.
0 microvolts. The LM2876T, LM3876T, and LM3886T each include a mute
function that eliminates turn-on/turn-off “pop”. All the devices are pin
compatible and come in standard 11-lead TO-220 packages. (From $2.50 ea/1,
000–available now except for LM3886T, which will be available in the
fall.) National Semiconductor Corp. Santa Clara, CA Oliver Baltuch
