Video game giant Nintendo has always been pretty protective about allowing its franchises on non-Nintendo products, but the public could be playing Mario and The Legend of Zelda on smartphones and tablets very soon.
Nintendo has teamed up with global Internet company DeNA to develop new mobile games based on its classics, including many of its iconic game characters.
The partnership is intended to build upon Nintendo’s existing video game systems and extend its reach into the market of smart-device users.
It looks like new games are on the way, too. According to Nintendo’s press release, only new original games will be created for mobile use, rather than porting games created specifically for the Wii U home console or Nintendo 3DS portable system.
Nintendo and DeNA also plan to develop an online membership service that is accessible from smart devices, PC and Nintendo systems, such as the Nintendo 3DS portable system and the Wii U home console. The membership service, which is targeted to launch in the fall of 2015, will be built on DeNA’s extensive experience and capabilities in online membership services.
Information on upcoming games and availability will be released in the future.
