Fast-enhancement PWM controllers improve energy efficiency in servers and high-end desktop computers

The ADP4000 and ADP4100 are presented as the industry’s first six-phase PWM controllers that satisfy the performance requirements of Intel’s VR11.1 specification for conserving power during light-load operation. The controllers use features of Intel’s new desktop/server spec to conserve power during light loading to save energy and generate less heat than earlier solutions.

Dynamic VID transitions that adjust the processor voltage and processor frequency help switch between power and performance states. The controllers possess various protection and monitoring features such as current-limit protection with delayed latch-off function and power-good monitoring. The current-limit protection allows for inherent per-phase protection against faulty components. A high pull-up function that indicates the voltage is within normal limits also is provided.

The devices have a fast-enhancement PWM (FEPWM) architecture that enables fast turn-on during transients yet preserves the clocking system for stability. The FEPWM architecture also maintains interleaving between phases even during transients for input filter power dissipation reduction. The ADP4000 includes a PMBus programmable digital interface to optimize compensation and control performance, and supports 25 PMBus-defined commands and 38 manufacturer-specific commands.
