Amphenol Communications Solutions has introduced its PCIe Gen 5 Flip CEM connectors. These PCIe Gen 5 connectors support bandwidths up to 32 GT/s (Gen5) and can mate with older generation PCIe Gen 4/3 add-in-cards.
Backward mating of the PCIe connectors allows devices with older PCI3 versions to be used with the latest PCIe Gen 5 Flip CEM connector. Backward compatibility is important in applications where backward compatibility is needed to maintain the functionality of the devices, said Amphenol. It also can simplify the design and reduce costs associated with the use of multiple connectors that use different PCIe versions.
The new vertical card-edge connectors offer unique design features, including “JJ” or “LL” type contacts that offer a space savings of up to 19.5% in the keep-out area compared to traditional CEM connectors.
“In traditional CEM connectors, the contacts are arranged in a straight line, which requires additional space on the board for routing traces. However, JJ and LL contacts are arranged in a staggered pattern, allowing them to occupy less space and minimizing the keep-out area,” explained Amphenol.
The Flip CEM connector is suited to applications where the PCIe connector needs to be placed extremely close to the edge of the printed circuit board (PCB) such as riser card applications. The JJ or LL contacts enable the connector to be positioned much closer to the PCB edge without causing an electrical stub that can potentially compromise signal integrity. This also addresses CB routing layout limitations on the card edge, the company said.
The PCIe Gen 5 Flip CEM are used in a range of applications. These include data communications such as desktop PCs, servers, risers and workstations; communications (routers), medical, industrial and instrumentation.
