FPGAs feature high performance, PowerPC CPUs, crossbar switch
6.5-Gbit/s transceivers and powerful DSP blocks yield high system integration
The FXT version of Virtex-5 FPGAs features embedded PowerPC 440 processors, 6.5-Gbit/s data-rate transceivers, and dedicated high-speed DSP capabilities. The chips can have up to two PowerPC blocks, each with superscalar seven-stage pipelines, 32-Kbyte instruction and data caches, and a 128-bit 5 x 2 crossbar switch that provides simultaneous access to high-speed I/O and memory.
The Virtex-5 FXT’s transceivers take only 200 mW at 6.5 Gbits/s and 100 mW at 3.75 Gbits/s. The transceivers have 4-tap decision feedback receiver equalization, transmit pre-emphasis, and support flexible 8b/10b, 64b/66b, and 64b/67b encoding. The ICs also include two to eight tri-mode Ethernet MAC blocks.
The devices have up to 384 DSP slices and 16.5 Mbytes of memory that can be configured to provide over 190 GMACs of processing and 92-Tbits/s memory bandwidth at 500 MHz. Versions have from 32 K to 196 K logic cells in 27 x 27-mm to 43 x 43-mm packages. (FX30T 32-k cell device, $159 ea/1,000—available now; other versions available 2nd and 4th qtrs.)
