Free dev kit customizes X86 boot sequence

The Boot Loader Development Kit (BLDK) allows creation of customized and optimized initialization firmware solutions for embedded Intel processor-based platforms that are fixed-function embedded designs – those requiring basic initialization and functionality rather than the full capabilities delivered with a traditional BIOS. It is based on the UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) which defines the layer between the OS and the platform firmware.

Because the Intel BLDK is based on open UEFI standards, a significant portion of the source code is openly available to provide flexibility for customizing the firmware initialization of code. The package has an IDE that facilitates easy navigation, modification, and debug of the underlying code base. See http://edc.intel.com/Software/Intel-Boot-Loader-Development-Kit.
