FSK/BPSK power line xceiver rejects noise

The SM2101 FSK/BPSK-based power line transceiver was designed with an emphasis on advanced metering infrastructure and automated meter-reading applications and can operate reliably in notoriously noisy grid environments. The low-cost part does not include a CPU or flash memory.

The IC offers a choice of two communication frequencies from eight factory presets. It can be set to BPSK modulation for noise immunity and compatibility to ANSI/EIA 709.1 and ANSI/EIA 709.2 devices, or FSK modulation for high immunity to phase distortion. The chip approximates the amount of noise on a frequency by direct measurement and the signal strength of received packets, supports CENELEC A-, B-, and C-band operation, and features receiver sensitivity of –80 dBV.
