Fully integrated, programmable haptic piezo controller is industry’s first

Offered in a 25-pin WLP, the MAX11835 TacTouch programmable haptic piezo controller is offered as the first fully integrated device of its kind for single-layer and multilayer piezo actuators, while allowing feeling of mechanical feedback to touchscreens and capacitive buttons. In comparison to other “driver-only” ICs, the part provides on-chip waveform storage and a playout generator, thus simplifying the addition of haptic feedback to any application.

The controller is designed for use in low-power handheld equipment and includes several power-saving modes, including an automatic power-saving mode between haptic events. It drives actuators over a wide 5 to 250-V voltage range, which guarantees a future-proof solution for alternative actuator technologies.

In addition, the piezo controller has sufficient on-chip memory to simultaneously store multiple user-defined haptic waveforms, which are downloaded at power-up through the 400-kHz serial I2 C interface. During operation, only a haptic trigger pulse is required from the system or application processor to play out the waveform. An EV kit is available, which comes with a resistive touch panel with piezo actuators mounted for evaluating the device’s haptic feedback. (From $1.40 ea/1,000 — samples available now.)
