Gate drivers support ‘new dual’ IGBT modules

Power Integrations’ SCALE-iFlex Single gate drivers fit the 100 × 140-mm dual IGBT modules up to 3.3 kV, targeting high-rel applications.

Power Integrations has launched the SCALE-iFlex Single plug-and-play gate-drivers for the “new dual” 100 × 140 mm IGBT modules. The gate drivers support modules up to 3.3 kV and are suited for light-rail, renewable energy generation, and other high-reliability applications that require small, rugged driver solutions.

The gate drivers fit the latest standard IGBT power modules including the Mitsubishi LV100/HV100, Infineon xHP2 and xHP3, ABB LinPak, and Hitachi nHPD².

The SCALE-iFlex Single gate-drivers use Power Integrations’ SCALE-2 ASIC technology which reduces component count compared to conventional products. The ASIC also provides advanced active clamping (AAC) over-voltage protection during normal operation, which is an improvement over simple soft shut down, adding extra protection in case of short-circuit during turn-on, said the company.

The SCALE-iFlex Single sits on top of one gate drive module, which consists of two IGBTs in a single mechanical package. SCALE-iFlex LT gate drivers can drive multiple modules.

Devices are conformally coated and feature reinforced isolation. Isolated housings ensure isolation between modules when they are mounted side-by-side. They are pre-qualified according to railway standards IEC 61373 – Class 1B (shock & vibration), IEC 61000-4-x (EMC tests), and IEC 60068-2-x (serial environmental tests). Burn-in is optionally available.

The SCALE-iFlex Single devices are rated at 2-A peak output current per channel at 85°C ambient temperature with no air flow. The operating temperature range is -40°C to 85°C. Higher power levels are possible with cooling or a lower ambient temperature, said the company.

The SCALE-iFlex Single line is sampling now. Electrical and fiber-optic interfaces are available.
