GDT family protects AC powerlines

Bourns’ gas discharge tube portfolio now includes a 2-electrode GDT family with very high current ratings for AC powerline applications.

Bourns, Inc. has expanded its gas discharge tube (GDT) portfolio with a new family of high-energy, 2-electrode GDTs. The Model GDT212EGDT216EGDT220E and GDT225E Series protect AC powerlines and other applications that are subject to high current surges. These high-current GDTs meet IEC lightning protection zone classification, UL1449 Type 5 and IEC 61643-311 standards, making them suited for surge protective device (SPD) applications.

Housed in a compact, low-profile package, the GDT2xxE gas discharge tube family features a very high current rating and offers a high surge capability at 60 kA maximum rated on an 8/20 μs waveform. These features deliver the surge protection performance necessary to meet AC power line application requirements, Bourns said.

The four new model series are available in a broad range of DC breakdown voltage options (150 V to 1000 V), making them suitable for virtually any voltage configuration in low-voltage networks, Bourns said. Also available are several terminal configurations and lead shape options to meet a variety of specifications. Applications include commercial and residential IoT and industrial and renewable energy equipment.

All four series are RoHS compliant and UL recognized. They are available now.

The company also recently added a high voltage 2-electrode overvoltage protector family. The Model GDT28H Series GDTs are designed for use in powerline equipment for general industrial use.
