Google Glass in the operating room

A joint study between Royal Philips, Accenture, and Google has outlined how doctors could monitor a patient's vital signs and react to surgical developments without having to turn away from the patient or procedure. The partners have simulated the first proof of concept for the seamless transfer of patient vital signs into Google Glass.

Though the idea hasn't been fully tested, bringing Google Glass to the operating room opens a window of possibilities, especially when apps become available for the wearable computer. Similar to the way Google Glass and your smartphone connect, the team linked the wearable device to Philips' IntelliVue software to transfer data, and patient vital signs were successfully transferred to Google Glass.

The demonstration was done by researchers in Philips' Digital Accelerator Lab based in India and the Netherlands, as well as Accenture Technology Labs. Though the demonstration highlights that there can be many uses for wearables, the proof of concept is just a demonstration and Google Glass is not yet used in the medical field.
