The Powerwall is a rechargeable lithium-ion battery designed to store energy at a residential level for load shifting, backup power, and self-consumption of solar power generation. It consists of a 220 lb Li-ion pack that measures 51.2 x 33.9 x 7.1-in. and includes a liquid thermal control system and software that receives dispatch commands from a solar inverter. The unit mounts on a wall and integrates with the local grid to harness excess power and provide the flexibility to draw energy from its reserve.
The battery mounts to an outside wall or to an inside garage wall. Up to nine can be stacked for a total of 90 kWh output. The battery comes in 10 kWh weekly cycle and 7 kWh daily cycle models. Both are guaranteed for ten years and are sufficient to power most homes during peak evening hours. Multiple batteries may be installed together for homes with greater energy need, up to 90 kWh total for the 10 kWh battery and 63 kWh total for the 7 kWh battery. It provides a round-trip dc-efficiency of 92%, with 2.0 kW continuous and 3.3 kW peak at 350 to 450 Vdc and 5.8 A nominal and 8.6 A peak output. The operating temperature extends from –20° to +43°C.
