Hall-effect switches get ASIL B upgrade

TDK Corp.’s Micronas HAL 15xy Hall-effect switches for automotive and industrial applications are now ASIL B-ready.

TDK Corp. has upgraded its Micronas HAL 15xy Hall-effect switch family for automotive and industrial applications. All devices are now defined as Safety Element out of Context (SEooC) ASIL B-ready, according to ISO 26262. This enables modules using the the HAL 15xy switches to meet higher safety criteria in automotive applications, including brake fluid level sensing, seat belt detection, and brake light switches.

TDK MIcronas HAL 15xy ASIL B Hall-effect switchesThe AEC-Q100 qualified HAL 15xy switches provide many diagnostic features, enabling deployment in ASIL A and ASIL B classified automotive applications, and for more stringent security requirements, they feature an additional power-on self-test, said TDK.

“Customers can enable a full functional test of the sensors’ signal processing path and output before starting standard operation, in order to increase diagnostic coverage,” said the company.

Key specs include a wide supply voltage range from 24 V down to 2.7 V for reliable measurements during voltage drops and extended reliability against voltage peaks as load dump pulses up to 40 V under ambient temperature conditions, said the company. The extended operating temperature range is −40°C  to 150°C.

In addition, the devices offer a wide junction temperature range from −40 °C to 170°C for operation in harsh environments. They meet high ESD levels up to ±8 kV (HBM).

The switches are available in a 3-wire version with a short-circuit protected open-drain output and a 2-wire version with a current source interface. They are available in SOT23 SMD and TO92-UA packages with various lead forms.

The HAL 15xy devices are in production. Samples are available.
