Haptics-enabled multitouch touchscreen controller combines proximity sensing
Part of the company’s 4D-Touch platform, the SX867x family of multitouch resistive touchscreen controllers is packed with innovative features such as long-distance proximity detection and advanced haptics driver support. The controllers offer ±15-kV ESD protection, making them ideal for a variety of applications such as mobile phone, tablet, handheld GPS, IP phones, automotive center consoles, and POS terminals.
These devices also feature a highly accurate 12-bit A/D converter for coordinates and touch pressure measurement with current consumption as little as 0.4 µA at standby. They can enter a low-power state between conversions. Unlike other touchscreen controllers, the SX867x devices do not require expensive matrix-type resistive panel for multitouch operation. The proprietary touch-sensing circuitry in the SX867X devices can support various common multitouch gestures such as pinch, stretch, and rotation on any four-wire analog resistive touchscreen. The touchscreen controllers support a proximity detection distance of more than 5 cm using any standard 4/5-wire resistive panel.
A haptics motor driver is incorporated on-chip for controlling linear resonant actuator and eccentric rotating mass micro motors (up to 250 mA) while providing acknowledgement to touch events, thus emulating the tactile feedback similar to mechanical keys which enhances the overall user experience. Additional features include an operating voltage of 1.65 to 3.7 V (SX8651/53) and 2.3 to 3.6 V (SX8674/75/76/77/78), a current consumption of 30 µA at 2.3 V, 8 ksamples/s, and a shutdown current of 0.4 µA.The controllers are available in small footprints of 4 x 4 mm or smaller and support 400-kHz I2 C interface/SPI (SX8653).
