Heat-flow sensors are low cost

Micro-Foil heat-flow sensors measure heat loss or gain of any surface,
flat or curved. They provide a nominal sensitivity of 2.2
microvolts/BTU/ft2*hr, with a maximum heat-flux rating of 20 to 30
BTU/ft2*s. Other ratings are available on request. A Micro-Foil
heat-flow sensor functions as a self-generating thermopile transducer. It
requires no special wiring, reference junctions, or signal conditioning. A
readout is accomplished by connecting a sensor to any direct-reading dc
millivoltmeter (or microvoltmeter) or recorder. ($83 to $97–stock to 3
