High-density converter takes aim at RF power amplifiers

Optimized for 50-V GaN RFPAs and high-voltage LDMOS applications

Flex Power Modules, a division of Flex, recently introduced the PKB4216HDPI, the newest edition to its family of DC/DC converters designed for radio frequency power amplifier (RFPA) applications in the telecom sector. A descendant of Flex’s 750 W PKJ4000 series, the PKB-D high-density converter, packaged in an eighth-brick format, is optimized for high-voltage LDMOS applications and 50-V GaN-based RFPAs.

The PKB4216HDPI features an input voltage range of 36 V to 60 V and an output of 50 V at 5 A. A wide-output voltage adjustment range of 40 VDC to 55 VDC offers developers the opportunity to optimize the connected RF section, with typical peak efficiency of 94.5% at 48 Vin and full load.

The PKB-D is available with a baseplate, designed to ensure conduction cooling in typical RFPA application environments inside sealed enclosures with no airflow. This allows for full-power operation at up to 85°C baseplate temperature and an output of up to 4 A/200 W at 100°C baseplate temperature. The operating temperature range of the device is –40°C to 125°C.

The PKB4216HDPI features a half-bridge design with the latest PWM controller technology, ensuring a high level of integration for low component count and high reliability (up to 10.68 Mhrs). Implementing synchronous rectification also contributes to the device’s high power density.

The PKB-D provides protection against short-circuits, overloads, overtemperature, and output overvoltage and input undervoltage. The device also features a remote on/off control with optional positive or negative logic. Startup into pre-biased loads is guaranteed, and the isolation rating from primary to secondary is 2,250 VDC.

The PKB4216HDPI is available in OEM production quantities.
