High-side LED driver enables dual operation

Suited for the camera flash function in portable battery-powered multimedia devices, the LM3554 high-side dual LED driver drives one or two high-current LEDs. The device’s architecture sources regulated current into two LEDs with cathodes connected directly to the ground — unlike traditional LED flash drivers that sink current from a single high-current LED back into the driver resulting in significant heat dissipation into the driver IC and reduced system reliability.

The two regulated current sources can drive loads up to 1.2 A from a single Li-ion battery. To configure the driver, designers can adjust the flash current levels and timer durations via an I2 C-compatible interface. Offered in a 16-pin micro SMD package, the part also features built-in timeout protection, four operating modes, greater than 90%, and a programmable 4.5- or 5.0-V constant-output voltage.
