High-voltage battery monitor IC achieves ASIL-D compliance

Maxim Integrated’s MAX17852 battery monitor IC with integrated current sense amplifier offers up to 16% space savings.

Maxim Integrated Products, Inc. has claimed the industry’s first data acquisition system to achieve ASIL-D compliance for voltage, current, temperature, and communication of a battery management system (BMS). The 14-channel, high-voltage MAX17852 battery monitor IC is designed for electric vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles, and other transportation systems, and is suited for smart junction box, 48 V, and other automotive battery systems with voltages up to 400 V and beyond.

Maxim Integrated MAX17852 battery monitor ICIn addition to meeting the ASIL-D standards for voltage, current, temperature, and communication, Maxim Integrated claims the battery monitor IC also offers the highest accuracy for delivering voltage, current, and temperature data with tight time synchronization. It allows a typical cell voltage measurement of ±0.45 mV at room temperature and a maximum of ±2 mV error in a temperature range of 5°C to 40°C, enabling car makers to get the most mileage range out of their batteries, said Maxim.

The MAX17852 also provides the fastest, most accurate data for calculating power management, state of health, and state of charge, said the company, with a current sense amplifier capability of +/-300 mV, and a gain setting up to 256 times and 0.3 percent current sense gain error.

The 14-channel battery data acquisition system integrates a current sense amplifier so that current information is acquired at the same time as cell voltage and temperature, while enabling a 16% smaller size than a discrete solution and up to 20% cost savings. The MAX17852 allows both hall effect sensors and shunt resistors to be used as sensing components.

The MAX17852 is available at Maxim’s website for $7.52 (1000-up, FOB USA) and is also available from authorized distributors. The MAX17852EVKIT# evaluation kit is available for $250.

Maxim Integrated’s MAX78000 neural network accelerator chip and MAX16160 four-channel voltage monitor and reset IC were selected as Electronic Products’ 2020 Product of the Year winners.
