How Innoz has changed the way we use the Internet

India-based company allows users to access the Internet through SMS

One of the most innovative technological companies in today’s global market, India-based Innoz provides a unique service to its clientele. Founded to help those less fortunate, Innoz allows its users to access the Internet, and even mobile apps through SMS, without paying for a smartphone they cannot afford. Their cost-effective mobile platform has allowed them to become immensely popular in their home base of India, and the company’s future seems bright.

Innoz was created in 2008, when the founders (who were still in college at that time) decided to launch a search engine that would allow users to access any information on the Internet through SMS (Short Message SErvice). As Internet penetration is still comparatively low in India, with the number of mobile phones far greater than the number of PCs and laptops, the Innoz founders were motivated to produce a mobile service that would prove cheap and effective.

The service was later rebranded as SmartSMS, and allows Innoz users to access Facebook, Twitter, and email over SMS. Currently, the service has processed over 1 billion requests from around 120 million users. Innoz has already launched in Dubai, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and Nepal, where its product has definitely impacted the way these countries think of and use the Internet. Innoz says it will be launching its products in Africa and Southeast Asia during the next couple of months.

SMS Messaging

Use SMS to access the Internet through Innoz
According to the company’s CEO, Hiram Deepak, Innoz is popular in India because “compared to the mobile revolution which has seen mobile communication rise exponentially in the past 10 years, the Internet revolution is lagging far behind.” In other words, while only 2.8 billion people out of the 7 billion around the globe are connected through the Internet, the percentage of those 7 billion that connect through mobile apps and services is far higher, making Innoz a top product in India. The company’s biggest weakness seems to be providing accurate search results, as current information in today’s world is fast-paced and always changing. Innoz is working to improve this by setting up an R&D team devoted exclusively to the problem, as well as seeking new content partners.

Innoz is also working on new devices and new applications, having already launched their Brownie app on Google Play this October, which will eventually allow anyone to host an SMS hotspot and with plans in the works for a new 3.3 touchscreen tablet with a thin bezel. The tablet will run on both the Internet and SmartSMS, though SmartSMS will still be the main retriever of information. While there is no word on when the tablet will be released, it will be run on Linux platform and come with the option of updating the Brownie OS through a mciro USB port that will also be used to charge the device.

Innoz has undoubtedly changed the way their users access and use the Internet, and the company isn’t finished yet. Their future goals including launching SmartSMS into many more developing countries, in order to make the world a better place, technologically speaking.

“We have just started and have a very long way to go,” says Deepak. “The dream is to make available the world of information to the less-fortunate, by using a simple, intuitive and affordable device that runs on SMS. Successfully launching and distributing it is our big goal in the years to come.”
