How this electricity-free refrigerator manages to keep food cool

Low-cost container designed to help low-income families

A new mini-fridge called the “Evaptainer” keeps food cool without using a single watt of power; rather, it works using just water and the sun.

Current models can be “powered” for two days using a single liter.

The cooling of the refrigerators occurs when a layer of evaporating water on top of the box takes extra heat with it. This design cools the interior of the chest by up to 30 degrees compared to its surrounding environment.

The colder air inside can extend the life of most food from two days to up to two weeks.

The Evaptainer is being tested in Morocco right now by families who don’t own a refrigerator. It costs less than $30 each and can be flat-packed for easier shipping.

Beyond those in need of an in-home refrigeration device, the Evaptainer is also being positioned as a device solution for those who go camping, hiking, or partake in other activities that require cooling on the go.
