How to directly access your computer’s desktop with your smartphone

Google launches new remote desktop app to allow Android users easy access to their at-home PCs

Google has launched an incredibly new mobile app that allows Android users the ability to remotely access their PC or Mac desktop via one’s smartphone or tablet device.

Android App for remote desktop usage

Called the “Chrome Remote Desktop app,” the program was launched this past week to much fanfare. It’s a build off the Chrome Remote Desktop app launched in 2011, which allowed users to remotely access their at-home desktop from another laptop or computer. The service was free then, and it’s mobile app version is free now, which is amazing considering the fees tied to other, similar remote-desktop programs out there.

Here’s how you set it up: download the app through Google Play so you have it on your mobile device. That part's easy. On your desktop, you’ll need to install the Chrome Remote Desktop extension in the desktop’s Chrome browser. Once that’s complete, grant the program access for the remote connection to work, and set up a secure PIN code for the PC.

The PC’s name will appear in the Chrome Remote Desktop page. Select it and type in the PIN code within the mobile app to confirm connection.

That’s it — pretty straightforward stuff, no?

Worth noting for the Android haters out there — Microsoft has a remote desktop app, as does Amazon Workspaces. So there are plenty of options to choose from, though Android has the potential to gather the largest audience.

An iOS version is expected soon.
