If you love checking out what your favorite websites have in store as much as I do but lack the time to crawl your way through them an RSS feed is for you. Setting up an RSS feed is a great way to get your favorite websites content fed to your computer as they are published. An RSS feed is an XML based protocol that allows us excellent access to a plethora of material.
RSS feeds are also a great way to allow others to see the fresh content you’re creating on your website. The best part is that they’re easy to set up and I’m going to explain how.
You can create an RSS feed with quite a few free RSS feed creators out there but for example’s sake, we will use RSS Builder. You will want to open up Note Pad for PC or Type Pad for Mac so that you can write some XML. Firstly, we’re going to write the version and encoding method of the document. In this case it’s going to look like this: .
Then we will enter the RSS version below: rss version=”2.0”> . Next we will add a channel tag which will allow us to add info on the type of channel we would like to add.
You may also add an image with a link to it and the images height and width so it would look something like this:
www.siteofyourchoice.com
http://www.siteofyourchoice.com
http://www.linkofyourchoice.com
You can also add the author’s name and a link for iTunes podcasting if you want to expand who might see your content. To finalize your RSS feed go ahead and save it as a feed.xml file and upload it to your server of choice. That’s all there is to it folks and if you want a better visual or more info check out Tinkernut’s video on how to set up an RSS feed.
