How to take stunning night photos with your iPhone camera

An app to improve the quality of your night shots.

While iPhone cameras have improved drastically since the first model was released almost ten years ago, night photography has always been a challenge.

Now, an app called NightCap Pro is working to improve the quality of your nighttime pictures, specifically those of starry night skies.

The app is equipped with preset modes to make the process simplified. To access these modes, tap the star in the bottom left corner of the app, and you can choose from Stars mode, Stars trails mode, and Meteor mode to capture what the sky has to offer. Additionally, to capture satellite trails in the night sky, users can opt for ISS mode.

While each particular mode works in a different way, all of them require you to use a tripod. For example, in Stars mode, you need to keep your phone still for 15 seconds, so the app can capture the image. In other cases, it requires you to tap the shutter button twice, once to begin taking the photo and again to end the process. You can also lightly enhance your photos by tapping the star, and then again on the icon that looks similar to the sun.

Additionally, NightCap Pro has manual settings that let you take other types of night photos. You can select your exposure length in settings, and adjust the ISO, exposure, white balance, and focal point by swiping on the screen. To set the ISO, swipe up and down on the left side of the screen, and on the right for exposure.

To change the white balance, swipe from left to right at the top of the screen, and at the bottom of the screen for the focal point. The app also works well for other night photography, including fireworks and snapping lights on a highway using a long exposure.

While NightCap Pro will improve the quality of your photos, the actual quality largely depends on your hardware. But compared to taking night photos with the native camera app or other apps available for iPhone, NightCap Pro significantly outweighs them.
