New from TouchJet, TouchPico is a small, white, hand-sized projector that turns any flat surface into a touchscreen monitor.
The maximum size a projection can measure and still act as a touchscreen is 854 pixels by 480 pixels; roughly an 80-inch image. At about 150 lumens, the screen is plenty bright enough to light up the room.
Included with the projector is a pen-like stylus that’s equipped with an infrared switcher. The projector itself includes an infrared camera within, which allows it to track the movement of the pen in front of TouchPico’s screen. This allows full interaction with any of TouchPico’s Android-based apps, including responses to taps, swipes, gestures, and more.
For comparative purposes, TouchPico is similar to Smart Technologies Smart Board, which is used in classrooms and boardrooms for education purposes. The difference, though, is the Smart Board requires special screens and larger, more expensive projectors. TouchPico works on just about all matte surfaces, and is expected to list for under $499.
Some notable things that are included with the TouchPico: HDMI and audio-out ports, as well as built-in Wi-Fi that operates with Android’s Screencast technology.
In terms of power, TouchPico runs off a standard AC line.
TouchPico just launched a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo to help fund manufacturing. The campaign is slated to expire at the end of August, at which point TouchJet will begin producing the devices, with the intent of delivering them to investors sometime in October.
