HP, citing serious burn risk, issues global recall on millions of its power cords

Company is once again addressing computer-related fire risks

For the second time in less than a year, Hewlett-Packard is addressing computer-related fire risks. This time around, it has issued a global recall of power cords sold with its laptops and other accessories, including docking stations, between September 2010 and June 2012.

According to the U.S. Consumer Safety Commission, more than six million of these affected cables were sold in the U.S. and Canada alone.

The recall follows reports that people were burned as a result of the China-made kit overheating and coming into contact with its users. As per a CPSC website: “HP has received 29 reports of power cords overheating and melting or charring resulting in two claims of minor burns and 13 claims of minor property damage.”

The power cords in question are marked with the code “LS-15” on their side. They were sold alongside HP and Compaq notebook and mini notebook PCs, as well as other hardware.

“HP customers affected by this program will be eligible to receive a replacement AC power cord for each verified, recalled AC power cord at no cost,” said a message on the company’s site.

This announcement comes nine months after a separate issue forced the company into pulling its Chromebook laptops out of stores following reports that the chargers were overheating.
