Hybrid IC power op amp delivers 2,000 Wrms output power
Amplifier is industry's highest-power such device
Dubbed “Amplisaurus Rex” by its designers, the PA30 power op amp from
Apex Microtechnology Corp. is the first IC amplifier capable of 2,000 Wrms
output power–up to 8,000 W pulse–from dc to 40 kHz. Its only
competition, according to the company, are large rack-mounted amplifiers
that are twice as expensive. The PA30's continuous output current is
rated at 50 A, and its peak output current can exceed 100 A. The amp has a
typical slew rate of 45 V/μs and operates from 30 to 200-V rail-to-rail
voltage ranges. Power MOSFETs are used for the output stages to ensure no
second breakdown, and on-chip temperature sensors provide thermal
protection. The device's external current limiting can be configured for
Kelvin sensing, as well as for multislope foldover limiting. A shutdown
pin can be controlled by either external command or from the amplifier's
thermal shutdown output. In addition, the use of optional boost pins
improves output voltage swing and efficiency by allowing the amp's driver
section to be operated on higher supply voltages than the output. The
PA30 is packaged in a 2.80 (W) x 2.20 (L) x 0.422 (H)-in. side-lead
package that provides a solid, flat heat-sinking surface. For full-power
output, the company recommends water cooling the device using its HS12
heat sink. ($1,585 ea/100–evaluation units available from stock.) Apex
