The IBM Watson Group has made a sizable investment in the genetic testing service Pathway Genomics to leverage the cognitive capabilities of Watson and create a state-of-the-art app that answers wellness questions based on user genetics. The bioinformatics market is expected to grow to $12.86 billion by 2020.

The app, which is called Pathway Panorama, allows users to ask questions based on their wellness-related genes, wearable data, physical, and emotional wellbeing, and within seconds, the app will scour through millions of pages of healthcare data from medical journals and clinic trial data to produce an individually tailored answer. In addition, Panorama will be able to monitor a user’s health and routinely notify the user of any recommendations.

“The result is recommendations that fit each of us like a surfer's wet suit,” said Dr. Michael Nova, MD, chief medical officer at Pathway Genomics. “Say you've just flown from your house on the coast to a city that's 10,000 feet above sea level. You might want to ask how far you could safely run on your first day after getting off the plane—and at what pulse rate should you slow your jogging pace.”

The app will be available at some point in the upcoming year, but a price has not yet been set. Dr. Nova speculates that the service will charge a small monthly fee.
