The image above is Russia’s ‘Tesla Tower’. It was captured by a drone flown by Russia Today, which was granted exclusive access to the mysterious facility located in the depths of Moscow’s forests.
Also referred to as the “Marx” impulse generator, the tower is believed to be one of the most powerful in the world. It was built in the 1970s by the Russian Electrical Engineering Institute, with the goal being to have a machine to test insulation and the effects of lightning on aircraft.
Additionally, the Tesla Tower was meant to be used to study the weaponization of electro-magnetic pulses, as well as the effects of a nuclear or solar blast on vehicles and electronics.
The Tesla Tower houses one of the world’s most powerful lightning machines, and is capable of creating 150-meter artificial lightning bolts. In fact, the Tower is so powerful that it can discharge as much energy as all the facilities in Russia combined; this includes thermoelectric, hydroelectric, nuclear, solar, and wind-sourced power stations (granted, it’s just for 100 microseconds, but an impressive feat nonetheless).
Russia’s Tesla Tower has been off-limits to the public, but its unique design has not stopped a curious few from hypothesizing its true intents, and visiting the town of Istra, 40 kilometers west of Moscow, to take secret shots of the facility.
Worth noting is that while the Tesla Tower might have a reputation as an abandoned site, it has, in fact, remained active all these years. In fact, its latest tests carried out were lightning protection tests for Russia’s Sukhoi Superjet aircraft.
