While I am a hardcore coffee addict, I do occasionally indulge in tea, and when I do, I become a tea snob: that means loose-leaf tea blends, complicated steeping instructions, and generally the judgment of my family. However, I am not such a tea snob that I would pay $13,000 for the perfect cup of tea. But apparently Bkon thinks people like that exist, as that’s what they’re asking for their new Craft Brewer, a tea-maker they claim can create the perfect cup of tea every single time.
Prototypes of this ridiculously expensive tea-maker are being tested in USA coffee shops, with plans for commercial sale later this year. The Craft Brewer uses a process called “reverse atmospheric infusion” to brew the perfect cup of tea, which certainly sounds impressive, at least.
Tea leaves and water are put into the machine’s brewing chamber, before all of the air is drawn out in order to create a negative pressure vacuum. This results in the tea leaves being lifted to the surface of the liquid, with the process being repeated for around 60-90 seconds depending on the particular tea blend. Bkon claims their new process makes tea so much more flavorful than simply adding boiling water that they’ve stated they’ve created “tea 2.0.”
But while the Craft Brewer may or may not make you the best cup of tea you’ve ever had, while reverse atmospheric infusion does sound cool, and while it comes with new tea capsule designed by Cambridge Consultants, it is still not worth $13,000, because it is a machine that makes tea.
It is. A machine. That makes tea.
It doesn’t run on cold fusion or save kittens, or something—it doesn’t even fetch you the tea or choose the tea or give you facts about your tea, it is literally just a machine that turns leaves and water into a hot, flavorful beverage. Admittedly the most flavorful hot beverage I might ever have, Bkon, but that doesn’t make you not crazy for slapping a $13,000 price tag on the thing.
