A group of students from Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands built a homemade racing electric vehicle that reaches a speed of 62 mph in just 2.15 seconds.
The vehicle, dubbed DUT13 weighs just 320 lbs., contains four 25-kW electric motors and is reinforced by lightweight carbon-fiber. The electric vehicle beats every gasoline-powered car out there, even the Bugatti Veyron with a 2.46 second acceleration time and the Aerial Atom with a 2.3 second acceleration time.
The car won’t reach speeds much higher than 60 mph since it was primarily designed to reveal the perks of electric cars. Electric vehicles are capable of such acceleration rates because there is no need to wait for the engine to wind up as with traditional vehicles. This is why the Tesla Model S that weighs 4,647 lbs. can reach speeds of 60 mph in just 4.2 seconds.
