Justin Poulsen, a conceptual photographer and physical prop specialist, has taken a unique and some would even say shocking approach to his most recent promotional mailer campaign. You see, as opposed to trying to get his foot in the door with potential clients, Poulsen has opted to send a severed thumb USB drive to these companies instead.
50 of these digit-drives were created. Each one is made of an ultra-lifelike silicon material and modeled from Poulsen’s own hand, and they all contain his promotional material.
The lifelike realism of these drives is a direct reflection of Poulsen’s ability to make props, which he often does in his photography instead of creating everything digitally.
A little Easter egg included on the drive: there’s a clip of “loading thumbs”, a swirling circle of thumbs meant to resemble Apple’s “loading” graphic.
Also worth noting is that each thumb was made to look slightly different from the other. In terms of standardization, though, they all feature cuticles, thumbnails, and a realistically colored bloody stump.
Below is a 1-minute video that shows Poulsen’s process in creating these memorable memory sticks.
