Image of the Day: Real car made of 500,000 Legos runs on air

When Australian entrepreneur Steve Sammaratino and Romanian marketer Raul Oadia teamed up, a masterpiece was created: a fully functional Lego car powered only by air.

Sammaratino crowdfunded the project using only one Tweet.

It took only 40 backers to get the pair their goal money and another 22 months to complete the vehicle.

The car consists of more than 500,000 Lego bricks — even the engine is made of Legos. The Lego-constructed engine has four orbital engines and a total of 256 pistons. What’s unique about the vehicle (besides that it’s made up almost entirely of Lego blocks) is that no gas is required. Sammaratino built it to run strictly on air.

If you want to hop a ride on the Hot Rod Lego car, don’t expect to go too fast — it can only reach top speeds of 12 to 18 mph. According to the project website, it was constructed this way to avoid a “Lego explosion.”
