Come September, the great state of California will be seeing some unusual drivers—so unusual, in fact, that they have to come with a $5 million insurance policy. It all starts this July, when California will begin accepting license applications for self-driving cars.
Though the self-driving vehicles will have to bring along a sane, sober and licensed human on their trips, the state will actually be issuing a license for the cars themselves, which will cost $150 each.
According to Discovery, the car manufacturers will only be able to take out ten of these licenses a piece, and the accompanying human must be trained by said manufacturers, which means we’re still a couple of years away from having cars that do all of the work for us.
The licenses will go into effect this September, part of a piece of California state legislature that must be carried out before the year’s end. The law will certainly lead to self-driving cars being a bit more common, as well as further experimentation with robocars, but other states and companies will probably wait and see how California’s legislature works out before they change any of their own laws.
