On one hand, drones are considered long range, remote-controlled toys with live camera feed; toys that will one day deliver online purchases like some sort of year-round cyber-Santa. Alternatively, they may be used as Big Brother’s tools of domestic and international espionage. Ultimately, technology is amoral ─ it’s how we humans use that technology that determines its implications. Youtuber Alex Cornell, edited footage shot by San Francisco’s DJI Phantom drones by superimposing a UI to craft a fictional vision of a future where drone police surveys the public. In the video, the robot drones patrol the San Francisco cityscape analyzing and intercepting potential threats.

Cornell explains his vision: “In the near future, cities use semi-autonomous drones for urban security. Human officers monitor drone feeds remotely, and data reports are displayed with a detailed HUD and communicated via a simulated human voice (designed to mitigate discomfort with sentient drone technology). While the drones operate independently, they are “guided” by the human monitors, who can suggest alternate mission plans and ask questions.”
