Samsung has formally unveiled its new Mirror and Transparent OLED display solutions, marking the first time the company has presented this long-expected technology to the public. In the announcement, Samsung explained that the purpose behind this novel line of display product is to provide today’s consumers with a much improved, more visually engaging purchasing experience.

The company’s OLED display technology is built with Intel Real Sense technology. This partnership has resulted in a visually compelling, highly interactive display that allows consumers to virtually see clothes or other retail items from a customized — and highly realistic — perspective; that is, it can be used in instances like allowing a consumer to see what they would look like in different clothes, shoes, or jewelry.

Speaking to the Mirror Display, this aspect of the technology delivers at least 50% higher reflectance than other Mirror LCDs, along with an improved color gamut, better contrast ratio, and much faster response than their LCD transparent panel counterparts.

Also worth noting: Samsung’s Mirror Display does not need the ambient backlight that’s necessary for displaying on-screen images on LCD technologies.

The company added that this technology could one day replace home mirrors, thereby providing digital information services like weather, traffic updates, and social media notifications, in places that currently have a traditional mirror.

Per the Transparent Display, there’s a higher color gamut than conventional LCD alternatives, increased transmittance, better clarity through a wider range of viewing angles, and a transparency level of about 40% (much higher than the 10% currently offered in transparent LCD displays).

These features could significantly enhance consumer-facing displays in places like car dealerships and malls, where they could be used to provide public information, transportation information, retail opportunities, and more.

In terms of at-home usage, this technology could one day be applied in place of a window or door, where in the former instance it could provide statistics like “chance of rain” as the homeowner looks outside, and per the latter, obscure visibility on one side of the display when a person has entered a room.
