Image sensor delivers 32-MP resolution for selfie cameras

OmniVision’s OV32B image sensor for smartphones delivers 32-MP resolution in a 1/3” optical format and 0.7-micron pixel size.

OmniVision Technologies, Inc. provided a sneak peek, ahead of CES 2021, of the OV32B image sensor, featuring a 0.7-micron pixel size to provide 32-megapixel (MP) resolution in a 1/3” optical format. This gives smartphone designers the ability to add high resolution to front-facing selfie cameras in a limited space. In addition to front-facing selfie cameras, the new image sensor can be used in rear-facing telephoto smartphone cameras.

The OV32B packs a lot of features, including 2- and 3-exposure HDR timing for up to 8-MP video modes and still previews, an integrated 4-cell color filter array, and on-chip hardware re-mosaic. This provides 32-MP Bayer output in real time, which can be challenging to achieve in the 1/3” optical format, according to OmniVision.

OmniVision OV32B image sensorLike many of OmniVision’s image sensors for smartphones, the OV32B is built on the company’s PureCel Plus stacked die technology, which delivers high quality still image captures and 1080p video recordings at 180 frames per second (fps). In low light conditions, this sensor can use near-pixel binning to output an 8-MP image with 4× the sensitivity. This translates into 1.4-micron pixel equivalent performance for previews and still captures, said OmniVision.

Other features include a CPHY interface for greater throughput using fewer pins, as well as a DPHY interface, and the option to integrate type-2, 2 x 2 microlens phase detection autofocus (ML-PDAF) for higher accuracy. Output formats include 32 MP at 15 fps, 8 MP at 60 fps and 6 MP (16:9) at 90 fps—all with 4-cell binning. The image sensor can output 1080p video at 120 fps, 1.5 MP captures (16:9) at 240 fps, and 720p video at 360 fps.

In 2019, OmniVision released its first 0.8-micron pixel image sensor with 32-MP resolution for high-end smartphones. Also built on OmniVision’s PureCel Plus stacked-die technology, the OV32A, with a 1/2.8-inch optical format, also provides advanced features, including on-chip re-mosaic and near-pixel binning.

Samples of the OV32B image sensor are available now. To schedule a meeting with OmniVision at CES, please visit the company’s virtual meeting portal.
