Image sensors target security devices

Omnivision has launched two new CMOS image sensors, the 4-MP OS04L for consumer security and the 5-MP OS05B for high-end security cameras.

Omnivision has developed two new CMOS image sensors aimed at security applications. The 4-megapixel (MP) OS04L targets consumer security devices, while the 5-MP OS05B is designed for professional and high-end security cameras.

Designed for consumer security devices, such as smart home, doorbell, baby monitor, IP, and HD analog cameras, the OS04L image sensor provides an upgrade path for camera resolution to go from 2 or 3 MP to 4 MP with a smaller pixel sensor in a 1/3-inch optical format, said the company.

The OS04L image sensor features a 2.0-micron pixel based on the company’s OmniPixel 3-HS technology and uses high sensitivity frontside illumination (FSI) for both bright and dark conditions. Other features include 2K resolution at 30 frames per second, 2×2 binning for enhanced sensitivity, and support for MIPI interfaces.

Featuring high sensitivity, high dynamic range, and low-light performance, the OS05B CMOS image sensor combines best-in-class pixel technology and quantum efficiency (QE) for professional and high-end consumer security cameras, such as industrial and factory surveillance systems, webcams, and high-end baby monitors. The OS05B with a 2.0-micron pixel in a 1/2.78-inch optical format features the company’s Nyxel near-infrared (NIR) technology for clear images in low-light conditions. The 2.0-micron BSI pixel is based on the PureCel Plus pixel architecture technology.

The OS05B offers a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) improvement of 32% over the OS05A. The NIR QE at 940 nm is improved by 24%.

The image sensor also offers selective conversion gain. “High conversion gain increases sensitivity and reduces the readout noise level while achieving optimum SNR under low-light conditions, and low conversion gain achieves a higher full well capacity in bright conditions, said Omnivision.

Other features include high-resolution video at 60 frames per second with two-exposure staggered HDR and support for MIPI and LVDS interfaces.

Samples of the OS04L and OS05B will be available in Q4 2022, followed by mass production in Q1 2023.
