It’s been over two years since Google has been sending people into far-flung places to capture as much imagery of the world for its Street View service as they can. Because some areas can’t be reached by car, the tech giant is known to send intrepid trekkers on foot, equipped with a special backpack with a 360-degree camera.

When it comes to capturing the many snippets of Thailand, the labor has been thanks to one man, according to Google. Recently the company added 150 new places of interest in the Land of a Thousand Smiles, including the Sukhothai Historical Park and ancient temples at Ayutthaya.

In order to capture the beauty of Thailand’s countryside, a Thai triathlete named Panupong Luangsa-ard strapped on the backpack and began his journey over the hills and through the forests. Using a mix of transportation methods, Panupong travelled an estimated 500,000 km, walking 500 km of it.

Overall, the quest to capture these sites took two years, including breaks on rainy days since the camera needs fair skies to get a clear shot. The Trekker backpack weighs about 18 kg and extends two feet above the operator’s shoulders. On a full charge, its battery lasts six to eight hours.

In addition to the new sites in Thailand, Google’s Street View has been extended to exotic locations such as the coral reefs in Indonesia, Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, and the pyramids in Egypt.
