While the Internet is, by all accounts, still in its infancy, it’s taken on several different forms throughout the years.
Early on, we saw the dot-com rush, which was followed by the e-commerce phase. Shortly thereafter, the world fast became interested in social media, and this changed the way we communicated and wrote content.
The next period appears to be the Internet of Things. Industry experts the world over agree that this new form of technological approach will quickly change the way in which we gather, communicate, and interpret data. Companies are beginning to invest significant resources into the IoT, and for good reason: Garner estimates that 26 billion IoT devices will be connected by 2020; IDC estimates 28 billion, while Cisco predicts 50 billion. Regardless of which company is right with their guess, the fact of the matter is that the IoT’s influence will be significant.
That said, it is important to understand the key decisions a company must make when embarking on an IoT project. Having the insight as to which solutions will work best will not only afford engineers and product designers greater efficiency in getting the product to market, it’ll also save the company a ton of money.
