Inductors meet automotive PoC requirements

TDK’s MLJ1608WG inductors offer a reduction in impedance variation compared with competing devices, enabling more efficient power transfer.

TDK Corp. has introduced the MLJ1608WG Series of multilayer inductors for power over coax (PoC) implementation in automotive applications, such as automotive camera systems for advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). PoC enables simultaneous data and power transmission over the same coaxial cable. For automotive applications, this is a big space and weight savings for wire harnesses.

The MLJ1608WG Series inductors feature a maximum impedance of 2500 Ω and impedance levels of 1000 Ω over a 300-MHz to 2-GHz frequency range. TDK said the MLJ1608WG Series offers much less current variation than conventional multilayer inductors with impedance characteristics that vary considerably, depending on the current applied.

Despite its small size, housed in a 1.6 × 0.8 × 0.8-mm package, the MLJ1608WG can handle a high-rated current of 500 mA. “This significantly reduces variation in impedance during current application,” said TDK. The components can operate at temperatures of up to 125°C with a current of 400 mA. The operating temperature range is –55 to 125°C.

Typically, two to four inductors are needed for filtering to separate data from the power supply in a PoC circuit. The inductors used in these filters need to have high impedance for AC components from low right through to high frequencies, said TDK. “By achieving impedance values of 1000 Ω or higher over a broad range of frequencies, the new MLJ1608WG Series is highly optimized for meeting such requirements.”
The MLJ1608WG Series is in mass production.
