Industry’s highest-current PWM ICs deliver 17 A peak

Parts suit midrange brushless and brush dc motors by slashing board space over discretes

Targeted at the fractional horsepower dc motor drive market, the SA306-IHZ and SA57-IHZ PWM ICs are offered as the industry’s highest-current parts of its kind — delivering 17 A peak — while operating over a supply range of less than 9 to 60 V. The parts are claimed to offer a 70% smaller solution over discrete circuits, by integrating three gate drivers, six FETs, two op amps, about 30 small passives, two resistors, and three temperature sensors — all in a 64-pin Power Quad package with a footprint measuring less than 2 x 2 cm2 .

Previously, to drive motors requiring current above 3-A continuous, system designers have been faced with developing discrete solutions involving up to 50 to 60 individual components. In addition, by further using a cutout in the printed-circuit board and mounting the device upside down, the power dissipation capabilities of the IC can be increased by up to three times over a standard on-board mounting configuration.

These parts give customers a simpler IC solution that incorporates a performance of up to 5 A of continuous output current (8 A with A Grade versions). The ICs feature cycle-by-cycle current limit, which provides the ability to precisely control motor current in real time for each motor phase. They also use smaller filter components because they can switch at frequencies of up to 100 kHz. Operating temperature is from –40° to 125°C.
