Inexpensive countertop turns normal kitchen into high-tech eatery

Internet-of-things device makes kitchen much smarter without replacing any appliances

Orange Chef has released a new device called “CounterTop” with the goal being to make kitchens everywhere just a bit smarter for their owners.

The device works with a bevy of on-the-market appliances, ranging from Crockpot slowcookers to Vitamix blenders, so there’s no need to purchase new machines. It also communicates with fitness trackers like Jawbone UP and platforms like Apple Health.

So, the obvious question here is what does it do? Well, say you get back from a bike ride — if CounterTop is synced to your fitness tracker, it will communicate with the tracker’s iOS app and offer suggestions like smoothie recipes that are in line with your lifestyle habits (exercise routines, sleeping patterns, etc.) So, if you’re a light sleeper who just completed a long bike ride, CounterTop might suggest a “pick-me-up” smoothie recipe that will give you the energy to get through the rest of the day.

The base of the device has an NFC reader for adapters; within the unit there are a slew of sensors that help measure ingredients. This allows CounterTop to track things like if lettuce is substituted for kale in some recipes, along with other similar decision making, so as to fully grasp what type of ingredients its owner prefers and keeps in the house. Eventually, the device’s algorithm will be customized to the point that the recipes and foods it recommends for eating will exactly correlate to its owner’s preferences.

There have been several kitchen-related gadgets announced in recent weeks, but the CounterTop looks to be the closest to fitting under the “Internet of Things” umbrella the public clearly wants. And at just $200, it won’t cost owners a significant amount to “smarten” up their kitchen.
