Daniel M. Lewin (May 14, 1970-September 11, 2001)

Daniel M. Lewin, a mathematician and entrepreneur, is perhaps best known as a co-founder of the web-based company, Akamai Technologies (1998).During his tenure with Akamai, Lewin was in charge of the research and development department strategies, including the development of several internet-based services. A former Israeli commando and graduate student at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Lewin had the drive and smarts when it came to developing several mathematical methods to speeding up internet traffic.

Among his employees and friends, Lewin was best known for his brilliance, being an inspiration and a born leader. He died aboard American Airlines Flight 11 on September 11, 2011, while trying to foil the hijacking of the plane.
