Innovative device combines old flash drives, creates single external hard drive
Creative concept gives purpose to outdated technology
Designers Lee Seungmin and Jin Juhyun received a design concept Red Dot Award for their innovative device, the Outdated USB Collector.
The Red Dot winning Outdated USB Collector.
Their concept project is exactly what it sounds / looks like: it allows users to gather up all of their old USB flash drives and combine them on a single device, to create a single external hard drive.
The concept couldn’t come at a better time. The size of external hard drives is constantly getting smaller while the capacity of USB flash drives is always getting higher. These unique circumstances have led to a generation of tech geeks like myself with a bevy of USB drives at home with no real purpose any more.
The case is made of “eco-friendly plastic” and features multiple USB ports and a user-friendly, über-simple display. The user simply plugs their old USB flash drives in to the device and voila, they instantly have a single, external hard drive.
The device’s LCD screen shows how many GBs each drive has and at the far right side, it displays a reading of how much space is still available. If space is short, simply remove one of the flash drives and add in a new one. The Outdated USB Collector can support up to five drives at a time.
The fortunate thing about this device is the recent announcement of 512GB flash drives hitting the market. With the release of this new technology, the value of today’s high-capacity USB flash drives will likely drop to what we’re paying nowadays for low-capacity 1GB and 2GB models—pennies. With a future outlook like that, the Outdated USB Collector stands to be of unlimited use.
