Integrated PoE-PD and dc/dc converter devices support up to 40 W for extended high-power applications

The NCP1080 and NCP1081 are integrated PoE-PD and dc/dc converter controllers for IEEE 802af and the pending 802.3at standard for PoE-powered device applications. The NCP1080 delivers 13-W to the load, meeting the requirements of the 802af standard. The NCP1081 supports extended power ranges up to 40 W of regulated power delivered to the application load in a two-pair configuration.

Both devices support the IEEE 802.3af standard, and the NCP1081 enables the latest approved IEEE 802.3at draft standard including two-event physical-layer classification. Typical applications include VoIP phones, wireless access points, Industrial Ethernet devices, pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) and dome IP cameras, RFID base stations, and WiMAX modems.

Supplied in a TSSOP-EP20 package measuring 4.4 x 6.5 mm, the pin-compatible NCP1080/1 combine in a single chip a PoE-PD interface and a dc/dc converter controller. These devices reduce BOM counts by up to 67% compared to other two-chip solutions. The devices take advantage of new and emerging power-sourcing equipment and support an adjustable UVLO mechanism, offer an integrated classification loop, and allow for external programming of key parameters.

The integrated dc/dc converter controllers help implement single-ended power supply topologies including flyback, buck, and forward converters and use a control scheme based on peak current control. (Ea/1,000: NCP1080: $1.45; NCP1081: $1.80 ea/1,000 available now.)
