6 x 6-mm device gets designed directly into portable handsets

The 6 x 6-mm RadioAnt internal FM antenna can be designed directly into a portable handset, such as a cell phone, MP3 player, or gaming device, eliminating the need for an embedded antenna in the headset cord, which is typically serves the dual function of being a listening accessory as well as an FM reception device. Presented as the industry’s first miniature internal antenna to combine FM, impedance matching, and signal amplification, the antenna solves reception, ergonomic, and aesthetic problems inherent with handset cord antennas.

The ESD-protected antenna also supports FM retransmission, in which devices such as MP3 or satellite radio players can transmit to FM frequencies without an extra cord. The RadioAnt also enables users to receive FM radio in a Bluetooth earpiece, or use the handset’s external speaker to listen.

Impedance is 50 Ω standard, but custom impedances can be provided. Current consumption is less than 3.3 mA at 2.5 V, and crosstalk is 47 dBm in frequencies from 824 to 2,000 MHz. ($0.50 to $2—volume quantities available now.)
