International Rectifier: 60-A power stage is cool-running, targeting next-gen servers
The IR3550 PowIRstage is a synchronous buck gate driver with an integrated synchronous MOSFET, and a Schottky diode available in a 6 x 6 x 0.9-mm PQFN package. It targets high-current multiphase buck regulators and simplifies dc/dc converter design for next-generation servers, storage, and communication systems.
The gate driver delivers the highest benchmarked efficiency in the marketplace for high current multiphase solutions and it does it at the highest useful current rating of 60 A. This allows customers to: 1. Increase the main CPU dc/dc efficiency significantly, saving energy and total cost of ownership or, 2. Meet a similar efficiency to previous generations but without a heat sink, saving space and cost; or 3. Meet a similar efficiency to previous generations but with at least one, possibly two fewer phases (For example, converting a six-phase design to a five- or even four-phase design) because of the high current-handling capability
The MOSFET device achieves up to a 97% efficiency at 1.2 V, has an input voltage range to 25 V, and output range from 0.25 to 3.3 V, and a switching frequency up to 1.0 MHz. It integrates a current-sense amplifier and features a synchronous diode-emulation that removes the zero-current detection and control burden from the PWM controller. The layout of the IR3550 allows fewer decoupling capacitors compared to other monolithic and multichip devices that perform a similar function. IR shows cases where the heat is removed from the printed circuit board, without airflow or a heatsink required, and to prove this capability, the company provides reference designs comparing the IR3550 to competitive devices using the exact same size, copper thickness, stackup, and via configuration.
