While many drones are designed to either carry small packages or as full-sized unmanned helicopters, Griff Aviation announced an aircraft that sits between the two. The company's Griff 300 drone weighs 75 kg (165 lbs) with the ability to lift an object of up to 225 kg (496 lbs).
The Griff 300 is an octocopter, meaning it has eight propellers that are powered by a separate motor. Depending on the weight it's carrying, a single charge has a flight time of 30 to 45 minutes.
The device is manually flown from the ground using a radio remote control. Users also have the option of a custom helicopter cabin-like mobile control station where they can fly it through first-person view.
Users can equip the drone with whatever cargo, sensors, or other gear desired; specific payload options are available as extras. The extras are designed for users in the armed forces, law enforcement, firefighters, and search and rescue teams. Additionally, there is a package aimed at wind turbine maintenance and one intended to aid in cargo-carrying.
While there is no current listed price, the company is also working on a bulkier model — the Griff 800 — which will be able to carry a payload of up to 800 kg (1,764 lbs). Models with higher capacities are also in the works.
